There was an article this morning in the L.A. Times about a lady who is stockpiling food in her house. The rising price of food is one reason. Another benefit is that it serves as insurance in case society breaks down altogether. She also makes her own bread, laundry detergent, etc.
The whole thing is comical because we have the tendency to look upon these people as a bit out there – a little overboard – but honestly I can’t think of a bigger “last laugh” than the one that would come from the mouth of a prepared person should things get out of hand.
But then again while it would be sort of romantic to eat canned food in your basement while the rest of the world burns, it does not sound like much to live for.
I feel bad for this lady in a way. As much good as she’s trying to do for her family, the best thing she could have done was keep quiet.
I mean, if things do get to the point of no return, and your neighbors know you have ten years worth of food stored in your basement, what do you think they are going to do?
For now, in Costco I trust.

“Costco’s Great Gift Ideas catalogue last Christmas included a one-year, four-person supply of dehydrated and freeze-dried food on sale for $2,999. It sold out.”
Wow.
Now, if only we could get a one-year, four-person supply of scotch for $2,999.
Then our survival kit would be complete.
